Reflection
by Randy on Feb.22, 2012, under Photography
Here is a photo of clouds reflected in a 2007 Freightliner truck I took in 2oo7. I just rediscovered this one. It is an early attempt at HDR High Dynamic Range Photography. The camera used was probably not any better than 6 megapixels. That is the reason for the grain. The blue metallic paint kind adds to the grainy appearance. Just completed another Magazine Cover. This one is another Trucking Industry Cover. This is an early version of the final digital painting.
Here are a few of the Photos I took at the Tulsa Freightliner Dealership trying to get some good angles to work the illustration from as well as get all the details of a 2012 Freightliner Truck.
4 Days and 4,000 Photos later
by Randy on Oct.25, 2011, under Illustration, Painting, Photography
Back in April from the 4th through 7th I did a photo shoot in Lincoln Nebraska with a great company and their very professional staff and drivers. 4 days, 2 photographers and 4,000 photos later we had many shots we wanted and some we could not predict but were pleasantly surprised with. here is one or two of those shots. We arrived at the tarmac at around 6:00 A.M. each morning immediately began to move trucks and shoot. we quit for breaks when the light got to hot and waited until about 3 each afternoon to start back in, often shooting right up to the sunset.
The second photo here was shot on the tarmac in Lincoln Nebraska and the background image was shot at the same time of day facing the same direction but an 8 hour drive to the south of where the Truck in the foreground was shot. can you tell? If so tell me where it stands out to you.
The latter two shots were taken inside the Goodyear hanger. A massive structure with tons of history and all of it’s age showing. It made a great contrast to these polished new trucks. Its size threatened to swallow the subject. In many shots the trucks looked like toys in the corner of a dark room.

My father and brother are artists too. my whole upbringing was surrounded by art. we all drew for entertainment and past time.

Catoosa Indians Old Gym Floor Still Lives
by Randy on Jul.07, 2011, under Illustration
In 2009 my parents celebrated their 50th high school graduation from Catoosa High School. Their class was the first to graduate from a brand new high school building in the middle of a small Oklahoma town near Tulsa, OK. 1959 was the year and along with the new building came a new gym. Built right in the middle of the school it was the center of all community activities. With a generous stage at one end and wood bleachers on either side. it played host to band concerts, talent shows, awards ceremonies, plays, and more. By the time my class came along it was the middle school. With a beautiful hard wood floor that had stood up to 50 years of basketball, dodgeball, P.E. and donkey basketball games. It was adorned with a large Indian Chief motif in the middle representing the Catoosa Indians. Gone now but not forgotten this symbol of more than a politically incorrect school mascott it was a fond symbol of childhood familiarity for hundreds of students that passed through those halls. Ah, the buzz of mercury vapor lights.
Here it is recreated to the best of my recollection. Please remove your street shoes before getting on the gym floor….

Cape Buffalo
by Randy on Dec.09, 2010, under Illustration
While waiting for a 3D animation to render, I sketched this image of a cape buffalo that has had it’s bones picked clean. Obviously after the lions have had their fill everything else has had a turn and nothing goes to waste.
I remember reading in Peter Hathaway Capstick’s book “Death in the Long Grass” <Live link> how some people report after the initial attack by a deadly predator such as a lion, that there is no pain as the victim goes into a state of shock while being eaten alive. While others report excruciating pain throughout the entire ordeal.

Leave a Comment more...Whitetail Sketch
by Randy on Sep.16, 2010, under Illustration
This was a quick sketch of a whitetail deer flagging and moving away. No hunter wants to see this. Although chances are he will come back around to get a better look at what spooked him.
Leroy Sketch
by Randy on Sep.16, 2010, under Illustration
Illustration done on computer working from photos.
I am starting to get quite a few comments on this illustration. so here is some more info on this sketch. I photographed this model and pulled the images into Photoshop in a digital format. Creating a new layer above the photos I sketched Leroy’s details on the separate layer. I also created a layer below the photo and filled it with white. Then I could reduce the opacity of the photo layer to wash it out a bit. Sketching on the top layer quickly and loosely just capturing the details that make this models features interesting. This sketch is a comp of 5 separate sketches done with this method. They were used in a comic book style ad and all 5 were done in under 3 hours including the photography itself. The sketching could be done with a mouse but goes much faster with a graphics tablet such as a Wacom tablet < www.wacom.com >. Using this method you could make the finished product look like watercolor, Oils, Pastels, Charcoal etc…
